Have you watched the movie Avatar? I watched it recently with my wife and kids. My kids were after my life. They very desperately wanted to watch it. So we all decided to catch the movie last weekend.
I must say the movie took me by surprise. I already had expectations from the movie especially because it was directed by the ‘Titanic’ director James Cameron. Titanic is one of my all time favourite movies. So naturally I was looking forward to watch Avatar.
What should I say? I wouldn’t say that I was awe struck by the movie. No, it was not the case. But still, there were many things that liked about the movie. Firstly, I liked the very get-up of aliens. It was very innovative. The Aliens were so adorable. They were innocent, brave, honest and quite good looking. They were not at all like the horrible looking aliens I have seen in previous movies. This was a refreshing change.
Secondly, I liked the fact that these aliens lived so close to nature. They worshipped nature and all living beings. For them nature was sacred. They believed that all living beings are connected to each other by a certain energy which flows within us. I must say- this is a completely new idea and very important in present day world.
I know you have read all about global warming atleast a zillion times. But this is something that we can’t simply read and shove at the back of our head. We are all moving towards a dead end. I read a very interesting article today in newspaper. The article argued that it is highly egotistical on our parts to think that we are saving the earth. This is absolutely wrong. We need to save ourselves and not the earth. It is we who will perish and not the earth. Earth is witness to creatures much stronger and bigger than we are. But they all perished. Similarly we will also perish one day if we will not care about nature.
This is what I learnt from the movie. We have to become more answerable to ourselves. I know about the high profile issues of big industries spreading pollution and countries fighting about it. All this is too big. What I can do is to make my own small efforts. And I will surely do that.
I request that you also do the same. I must take your leave now. Please take care. Bye.
That very day, the ‘common man’ had a long discussion with his kids where he told them the need to conserve energy by switching off the lights which are not in use. He told them about thousands of animals, birds and plants that have become extinct over the years. The kids were both fascinated and shocked. They not only saved power but also encouraged their school friends to do so.
