Life has it’s own ways to teach us new things. I read somewhere that parents grow up and live a completely new life while their kids are growing. It is very much true. I learn so much from my kids. There are so many things that I learnt and understood only because of them.
Take for instance – dolls. Now I have never held a doll all my life. Dolls were never a part of my existence. They belonged to a world completely different from mine. Also my sister was simply not fond of dolls. She never had one. So I must confess- I grew up being very prejudiced about having dolls. I had this opinion that they are good for nothing.
My views took a three sixty degrees turn when my little daughter pointed at a little doll while we were shopping in the mall. She just wanted to have that doll. My wife was very happy and was enquiring about the cost when I simply cut the conversation short and went back home. I announced that no doll will ever enter my house. My daughter will rather spend her time reading books, playing games and participating in extra co- curricular activities.
My daughter became sad. She told her mother how all her friends had a doll and she also wanted one. It was then that my wife talked to me. She told me how dolls are very normal toys that can actually become good companion for our daughter. After much reluctance, we brought home a doll. I remember she had rosy cheeks. My daughter was happy beyond any limit. She hugged me so lovingly.
From that day, I saw a side of my daughter that I had never seen. The doll became her companion. She called her lucy. She used to love her and take care of her. She would show her doll to everyone and would not let anybody eat dinner unless we said good night to lucy.
I am glad I left my rigid stance about dolls. All kids love toys and toys should bring out the best in them. Nothing can be better than love and sharing.
But I must take your leave now. Please take care. Bye.
The ‘common man’s’ daughter still had her first doll with her. She would tell everyone who visited the family the ‘proud’ story of how her dad brought her first doll.
