I really can’t stop smiling. I am smiling since yesterday. Oh God- I am so happy. But let me start from the beginning. Remember, I told you that I came face to face with my wife at Mrs lawrence’s doorstep. Ha ha ha. It was such an amusing thing to happen. I was really wondering what’s going to happen next but my wife was laughing like anything.
She looked at me in the most warm way. Mrs lawrence’s voice recalled us back to reality. It was then that I came to know about the secret my wife was hiding from me for so many weeks. Oh God- I never realized what she was trying to do. Let me tell you.
My wife was learning to knit a sweater for me from Mrs Lawrence. I simply can’t imagine this. She wanted to gift me a sweater on my birthday and therefore was learning to knit it. It was my birthday yesterday and she gave me the beautiful navy blue sweater. I just couldn’t hold back my tears.
This is the most precious birthday gift I have ever received in my life. I know what this means to my wife. My wife is basically a very restless person and she has always scoffed at the idea of knitting. She hates those old ladies who are always knitting and gossiping. To think that she learnt to knit especially for me is not something usual.
I remember always missing the handmade sweaters. My mom used to knit sweaters for us as kids and I simply loved the warmth they had. I terribly missed them after growing up. Nobody wears such sweaters now. There are so many readymade options that people have forgotten the simplicity, hard work and love that binds the wool of a handmade sweater.
I am thinking about all the hours my wife has put to make every single knit. Her love, her efforts, her warmth is there in it. Oh- I feel so good. I tried the sweater. It has the perfect fit. This winter people are going to find me in this sweater everyday. I called my mom and told her about the sweater. She was happy beyond limit. She was praising my wife like anything. Oh- that has always been the case. My mom has always liked her more than me.
Right now, they are both discussing patterns and colours in great detail over phone. But I don’t mind- I am very happy. Let me take your leave now. Please take care. Bye.
The ‘common man’ brought in his birthday with a feeling of warm contentment. He looked at his house, his kids and his wife- yes- he was a middle aged man much past his youth. But he didn’t regret it one bit. Because he had his world with him and he thanked God for everything.
